Does anyone know what is the current state of the art equipment for recording and transcribing research data?
Is it mini discs these days or hard drive type gizmos?
I haven't bought any for a while so I've been using tapes until now.
I'm costing up a grant proposal and need three sets.

Since research covers a vast scope of possibilities. Can you specify the data you wish to record ?

Any thoughts on this?

I need to comply with data protection as well, so no sending over the internet.
The interviews will take place in three areas. Guess I'll be travelling to collect them?de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar

I am a university research fellow, and mainly collect data by conducting interviews. I use a digital recorder from Olympus -- go to their website and search for DSS and you will find the apprpriate kit. Don't forget to cost in the foot-pedal for transciption/playing recordings.
I am baffled by your comments about "sending over the internet" -- my work is regulated by an ethics committee and is fully compliant with data protection rules, but I use email to transmit data files (and take reasonable precautions to ensure that they do not fall into the wrong hands).0 -

You're not on your own, I'm baffled too. I've always used email for sending data.
That's what I was told last week
It worried me a bit
Thanks for the suggestions
