Insurance - sold old car but not got new one yet.

I was wondering if anyone knew what the options were when you sell one car but don't have a new one yet. Do they usually offer the option of freezing the policy for a few weeks and then start it (with any additional premiums) when you buy a new one? Or do you have to cancel and then start a brand new one, losing any part year no claims?

Obviously we'll be calling our insurance company but was just wondering what other people have found out in similar circumstances.

I think different insurance companies do different things. Some of the cheaper ones will charge absurd admin charges to do anything, others will be more helpful. Best to check with your own insurer...

I just had to do this, they let it continue for a month without a car on it - cost about £4 for the month, then i just added my new car and it carries on as before

Tell them nothing until you buy a replacement. Unless you are going to cancel the policy.

I think we'll leave it for a couple of days and then if we don't have anything let the insurer know. Thankfully we're with a decent co. who didn't make any admin charge to change the car last time. So hopefully it should be painless which ever way we decide to go.

    Thanks for replies
