Plywood boxing in around pipes

Hi all, just wondered if anyone could advise on this.
I had some boxing in around pipework replaced in my bathroom using plywood but I'm not sure which type of paint to use.
There's some plywood elsewhere in the house which has been painted using gloss (by the previous owner) and it looks all streaky and terrible so I was thinking of sanding it down, priming it then painting it with emulsion. Is that the best tactic?

Why not ?
I always paint pipe boxes with emulsion no need to prime it as its porous and absorbs the paint anyway.0 -
Satin Wood is a good alternative to Gloss and is hardwearing and washable.
If you decide this option Wickes have a good range of colours and is a bit cheaper than Dulux.
Or pick up some paint brouchers from DIY Stores it will say in those what paints are best for0 -
Prime the plywood with two coats of polyurethane varnish.
Coat 1. 60 white spirit/40 varnish. This thin coat will penetrate into the wood and dry quickly.
Cost 2. 40 white spirit/60 varnish. A bit longer to dry but more protection
Optional coat 3. varnish straight from the tin. Thin coat and drying time as on the tin.
Sand down and paint as normal. In a bathroom heat/humidity and water will degrade the plywood if not protected with the varnish. Emulsion will allow water through to the wood, satin finish less so and gloss will give full protection for a couple of years at least.0 -
Any oil/spirit based finish is ok in a bathroom.I tend to use oil based eggshell, similar to a satin finish.....Its down to personal preference, you could varnish it like Directdebacle says and it would be fine, I'm not keen on the look of ply so I would paint it...Just don't use emulsion in your bathroom as it will craze badly.....0

I'm going to go for the eggshell I think, thank you all for your help0

theres no point in using oil paint on the plywood (in a bathroom) if you just paint the surface.
the moisture will get into the wood anyways thro the edges.
either paint the whole thing 100% properly before final fixing or just use standard emulsion.Get some gorm.0 -

I don't think the OP would just paint the top Ormus:D.
If they use WBP ply it will be fine.Personally I would use MRMDF as you get a far better finish.
Never use standard emulsion though because moisture content in the emulsion changes in a bathroom the emulsion would crackle within a month....Its a big no no ....0 -
most peeps fit the wood and paint afterwards. thats the usual method. even the pros do that.Get some gorm.0
