Train Tickets - Always Cheeper in Advance???

Please tell me if I am being stupid, but I want to book my train ticket for tomorrow in advance online tonight, however my friend is convinced that we might be able to get a cheeper ticket at the train station tomorrow. Which I am really doubting. There are only two of us traveling from Northampton - London 9am-6pm so probably have to end up getting the off peak travel card at £28.80, I have split it at Milton Keynes to get £27, but she thinks we should be able to get it for around £20 at the station tomorrow, as he mum did a little while ago, although I have none of her travel details.
Shall I just go ahead and pre-book my ticket?

Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

If there are specific 'Advance Purchase' tickets still available, then it will be cheaper in advance. If not then what you see online is the same as what they sell at the station. Certainly shouldn't be any cheaper at the station anyway, in theory. If you want seat reservations book it now, otherwise just buy tomorrow, especially in case your friend is right.0
