I had a similar experiece with Egg last year. They wanted to increase from 21.9% to around 26% on a balance of around £4500

I clearly told them I wanted to opt out of any extortionate interest rate hikes, more than once via secure message.
I also cancelled my internet debit from that card, and in short have not used the card from that date....obviously because I was closing it down.
I have never missed a payment in my life, nor been late on any account. Ive always paid a lot more than the minimum balance, and never had any problems. So why they were doing this was beyond me, and they sent the same uselss generic responses others have had when I asked why. Ive had my Egg card for about 8 years too !!!

A couple of months ago I received a email stating they were increasing my credit limit from £6k to £7.6k..which I found odd given the account was closed. I queried this, and it seems they totally ignored my request to close the account last year !

Im fortunate enough to say that the account is now cleared, and they will never get another penny from me as long as I live.

One query though. This card now has zero balance, and a limit of circa £7.6k or so and will not be used again.

I still owe circa £5k on an MBNA card ( also frozen due to same circumstances around a year ago ), although with an apparent £12k limit on that card ( reduced from £16k at that time )
Mint with £1500 balance and £4k limit ( 0% transfer from Egg to finish the egg card off. Mint card is still active, and with sensible APR, excellent Mint )

Will telling Egg to **** off and closing the account have a positive or negative impact on my credit ratings if I try to apply for another card ? Primarily to gain access to a 0% account to transfer the MBNA balance to ?
Or would leaving the Egg account open be better for applying to others ? At the minute I think my rating suggests Ive borrowed some 26% of total credit available to me on Experian. 100% "green" good history everywhere.

I did apply a few times about 15 months ago to try and get a 0% card, but I owed considerably more at that time, and was turned down each time, already owing some 70-80% of available credit at that time. So stopped trying.

And can anyone reccomend a good card to apply for to transfer the MBNA balance too ?
