In arrears or in advance?

Options
Hello again!
I'm still tidying up my fuel bills at the end of the winter and just wanting a bit of advice on how best to manage my DD accounts. With my winter fuel bills minus the payments I've been making, I come out as owing my energy company about £150 overall. Now, with the lower usage over the summer, this will be paid off easily enough with my existing DDs, but I was wondering if this is the best way or if it is wiser to pay that off now so my overpayments over the summer give me a buffer of credit ready for next winter, if you see what I mean.

Which way do you do it?

  • Hi,

well I prefer to be in credit heading into the winter months, then if it's really cold don't have to think, jings can I turn the heating up, I like my heat.

You wouldn't have to pay it off, unless you want to, just increase DD.

I assume they don't charge you interest on debit amounts and don't pay you interest on credit ammounts, so better in that respect to have your account in debit.

You can always build up a surplus by putting your money into a savings account ready to use for the winter bills.

From a money saving perspective if you build up a credit You lend them your money interest free, then as your in credit you may think less about whether you really need that heating so spend more than you might otherwise.

.. you need to balance the convenience and hastle involved for what suits you.
