HIP Packs - quick wins?

I've been told there's a number of silly things you can do which give you a better overal review on your HIP

- fitting energy efficient lightbulbs everywhere
- insulating the roof
- putting draft excluders round the letterbox

What else is there? I don't intend to replace my aging boiler or anything but what other things are quick wins?

  • Might be the case that these would improve the EPC but most buyers don't look at them anyway, so why waste the time and cost?

As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.

There is no point in doing in of these things, the HIP asessor probably won't notice - my house has most of the lightbulbs as energy saving, yet on our HIP it says, that the house has less than 50% energy saving bulbs!

I assumed the loft insulation was a good idea - it only cost £100 but I didn't feel it really needed it.

Wierd. Loft insulation is one of the things that genuinely makes a house warmer, and the heating cheaper.

However I agree with the posts above. Don't waste your time. HIPs are mostly ignored because most people by now realise they are unreliable/pointless.

The light bulbs ARE worth doing because they may well (ours did) look for the high percentage of eco bulbs. It could just tip your points score over into the next group above.

Plus, you can take them out afterwards if you want.

I agree that ‘they’ don’t appear to be too fussed, but you never know who you’ll get. A neighbour of ours had the immersion heater ‘stat setting looked at. (must’ve been a quiet day!)

Equally a friend with solid walls had the unwarranted bonus of his being put down as ‘cavity wall insulated’.

We're south facing and get sun all day. We've never had a problem with heating - we always assumed the guy downstairs had the heating on 24/7 and was radiating up. Having spoken to him a couple of weeks ago he was always telling people he never had to have the heating on because OUR flat was warming his. Now we know it's just the sun!

I was actuallly hoping the insulation would keep us cooler because the roofspace gets incredibly hot during the summer and the insulation should stop that leaking in.

agreed, the EPC is pointless, save when it is a very low rating though. I have seen 2%
