Reclaiming Late Payment Fee on Store Cards

I have a Burton's store card which I used at Christmas. I was so certain I had made a payment in Feb (If there is a balance outstanding, I always pay ahead of time), but cannot find a receipt. However, I was furious to get a £12.00 late payment fee on a balance of £33. I understand If I made a mistake I should pay the interest for the amount outstanding, but feel this is excessive. (And when did the hand of Santander extend to this store card?). I rang Santander, but got the usual Offshore stonewall response. I want to reclaim this late payment, has anyone been able to do so? I have since paid the balance, and am waiting to close this account done in protest (I've had this store card for the last 30 years), but want to get some reponse from Santander.

How did you pay? Cheque, standing order, direct debit, debit card, even cash? You should be able to find some form of proof from your bank account statement (but payment in cash maybe difficult especially if it was for a relatively small amount)

I'd be more interested in finding the missing payment than chasing the late payment charge (which might be removed anyway if you can prove the payment was made)
