If you don't mind having a new number (with the same area code as your existing line), you can do it all for free with Sipgate. See https://www.sipgate.co.uk for details.
I've been using them for over a year now, and have nothing but praise.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Another vote for Sipgate - we have four family members connected up, one using a Speedtouch 716WL router (in Spain), two using Grandstream ATA486 / ATA496 ATAs and we have Siemens S685IP phones:

The Siemens phones aren't cheap but they are excellent IMHO.
Thanks

Do you need a specific router to use sipgate or similar?
thanks0 -
No, any router capable of doing port forwarding will suffice.
I use a dedicated phone (it's also a Siemens.. the model escapes me). It's part of a set of 4, all wireless. These then connect to PBXes.org where I aggregate a bunch of SIPgate accounts. My setup is a bit complicated, but the principle is the same.
If my mobile is in the house, it'll also act as a voip client. If I'm out of the house, calls get forwarded to it over POTS.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Thanks for that lee, to get the VOIP on your mobile do you use a application?
Oh and would you recommend a hand set for a new VOIP user?0 -
I also use Sipgate - with a Linksys PAP2T Analogue adapter connected to an old analogue DECT phone and also with a ZyXel WiFi phone. The Linksys adapter seems to work better.
If you want to keep an existing landline number I think Sipgate can do it, although I assume they won't do this as part of the free service. Gradwell can certainly port existing numbers, although their service is not free (about £3 a month I think).Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

I just use the standard Nokia SIP client on my phone. No software required
