working out what i owe...

Options
Hi, I have had estimated bills for a couple of years and want to take the plunge in finding out how much i owe - I know I owe NPower and not vice versa!. Rather than just ringing up with my meter readings I would like to try and work out from my bills, (only prob is i can only find my bill from Dec 2008:eek:. Can anyone direct me to a site that can help me with my calculations please (both elec and Gas)...

  • OMG, why have you not read your meter for 2 years? You might be in for a nasty shock!
I would just submit your meter reading and make sure you are sitting down when they tell you how much you owe.
My friend paid estmated bills for a year and ended up owing £1000.

You need to find the last bill that was based on an actual reading plus you need to know how much you have paid between that bill and now. You can then find the prices on your suppliers website.

This looks to be just what I need before I ring NPower up.

    Thanks!

Okay I have rang NPower and I owe them £525:eek:. Wondering what to do next I can spread the debt and have my payments adjusted to £210 per month or switch to online tariff for £179 (still spreading debt). Or I could I guess pay off the £525 and stay on current tariff at £166 or move to online tariff for about £125. Have thought about switching to EDF but guess I would need to still pay the debt with NPower in full first - presume nothing is transferrable???

    Thoughts anyone?

You can't switch until you have cleared the debt.

I wouldn't suggest switching even if you could - you'd then have even less time to settle the balance, 28 days unless you could agree an instalment plan, and even then most companies would want you to pay a substantial amount off the debt first. It'd be another millstone hanging around your neck as you'd likely be paying the new supplier too :(

Is the balance affecting any DD discount you are receiving? If it is, clear it and go on the Online Tariff, depending on the terms (e.g. cancellation fee? length of contract?) or spread it out over the year if it doesn't affect you and you think this would be easier. :) Hope this helps!

NPower should allow you as long to pay the arrears back as it took you to accrue them (ie: the time period - 2 years - since the meters were last read)
