What car should I buy?

Hi All
We (myself, wife and 2 kids aged 1 + 3) would like to buy a second car. I use my car for work which can be 7 days a week. The new car will be used for shopping, taking kid to nursery + other kids activity and other minor use. I guess it will be used for roughly 5k miles a year, mainly in town.
Additionally we are in our twenties (only mention this as it would be a bonus to get a car to reflect our age) and have around 8k in savings. We do not have a "scrappage" car and are very flexible whether to purchase a 3k car or get a new car (obviously upto 8k) and hopefully keep it for 10 years.
I guess it a perfect world we would have a scrappage car and then get a new car.
Any ideas what we should buy? We are not in a mad rush as have done without, should we wait for a couple of months to see if other "incentives" are introdcued after scrappage? Plus what would be the better 3k cars for us?

The 1st thing that strikes me is what is your current car? can that not be better used as the family car and you get something more appropriate for work? I.e. something small and sporty if that is your style or frugal if distance is the thing.
Other wise for your requirements almost anything will do the job so why look further than a petrol ford focus.0 -

+1
Based on the limited info, the petrol focus would get my vote. the 1.8 to be specific.0 -

Audi A2 is out of production for five years now, but the residual is ridiculously high. The all aluminium body will never rust. Get one for £5,000 and you can sell it at any time and lose very little money.
The TDI has a CO2 of 119g/km, so the road tax will be £30 from April. Combined mpg of 64, insurance group 6. It looks distinctive, even after ten years. A bit on the small side, but seats four fine.0 -
My current car is a Zafira diesel - I am a taxi driver therefore need the car
.
The A2 does look good, I would prefer a Hybrid solution but dont think 7k will buy much.
In terms of new cars, if I do not have a scrappage car would it be safe to say a new car just would be feasible?
