Thanks Kiraroo that is a great post, lots of pracical information from a very experienced owner.
Nellie my mum cat came to get me when the birthing started and I assisted all the way through. It did not stop her trying to dump the smallest kitten several times in the following weeks though! Oh and when she went in for her spay 8 weeks later she was already pregnant again, little madame!

Thank you everyone - I got some special food from the vet's today which she is wolfing down - little and often. Also noticed she is drinking which is a good sign. The vet's have offered lots of practical help so we should be o.k. Will keep you posted - and we are working on DH to see how many we will keep - he is getting quite keen - last seen cooking up chicken breast to tempt her!!!

Just an update - she is expanding fast - wolfing down food from the vets - turned her nose up at eggs. DH caught lifting her up from the floor to the worktop where we put her food so dogs can't get it!! Food is served in the utility room by the way - she is not allowed on the kitchen worktops!

We have made her a "nest" out of a large box, with a door cut out of one side, with a sill of 3 " so the kittens can't fall out. The top is covered with a dark towel that hangs down the door side so she is nice and private. We reckon they are due any day as she is unsettled. Seems to like the nesting box though - so fingers crossed. Vets have been really helpful. Will keep you posted.

P.S. We are keeping at least two.

I wouldn't hold out too much hope for the nest tbh. Ours spent weeks looking for cozy corners, and we set up a couple of likely places ready for her.

Late one night, half a dozen stragglers were sitting around the firepit after my birthday bbq, when DD (10) went off to bed. She's a complete wind up merchant, so when she came running back out saying "Mia's having the kittens on my bed!" (It's a high cabin bed) I refused to believe her. I was utterly resolute that no cat would deliver somewhere so exposed.

Everyone else eventually succumbed- and drifted off to see if she was telling the truth. One person managed to perusade me- and I got there just in time to recussitate kitten #2, who was stillborn.

I've still not lived it down...
