Royal Mail - missing parcel

Just to say first of all, I will be phoning Royal Mail tomorrow regarding this, but just wondered if anyone had this happen before and what the outcome was.
I got home from work on Friday to a 'Sorry, you were out' card from Royal Mail and another card from another company to advise I had missed a delivery. I knew I had two things on order, but one is a chest of drawers and i'm not expecting them until the end of month (and wouldn't expect them to just deliver without letting me know).
Anyway, the Royal Mail card says that they left the parcel with my neighbour, so off I went to collect it. I thought it was a bit odd that they had left it with a neighbour around 8 doors down, but apparently he takes in parcels for the street as saves us going to collect them (nice gesture, but the collection office is less than a 5 minute walk).
After looking around he didn't have anything for me and said he didn't remember taking anything in today. He said he's speak to his son in law (who is a postman for the area) and also mention it to the postman in the morning. A bit confused, I left it at that.
Yesterday I went to collect my other delivery which I thought may be the chest of drawers, but it wasn't, it was what I was expecting from Amazon, but thought they still used Royal Mail, hence why not being too worried the night before. When I got back yesterday my neighbour came round to say he had spoken to his son in law and someone else and neither of them had a record of a parcel being left there.
I now have no idea what the parcel may be and where it's gone. The card left hasn't been completed fully as it just has my name and in the address part is where they've put 'Parcel left 4 U @ No 19 etc'). My first thought was someone may have taken it as I live in a flat in a converted house and the card wasn't actually put in my postbox, but left on the side (and anyone can open the front door to access this area) but then why would they leave the card?
Like I said, I will phone them tomorrow, but if it was posted by normal first class, would they have any record of it? If not, is there anything I can do seen as I don't know what it is and who has sent it? I'm quite intrigued by what it is to be honest as am only expecting a magazine subscription which I doubt would be a 'parcel' and this isn't due for several weeks!
Thanks for any replies.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of posts regarding Royal Mail on these forums, and you use the forum's search facility of find them. I don't really know what you expect to learn from these though... just phone RM and ask what they suggest. Most likely, you'll be able to find out who signed for the item (if applicable). If you're not satisfied with what they say, then please do reply here. But, until we know what they say there is little advice I can offer.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

To see if anyone else has had the same experience and what the outcome was. I did search, but after 4 pages with no luck, I decided to start my own post.
I phoned my local office today who didn't answer the phone, so phoned the main number instead. Finally got through to a human who logged my 'complaint' and suggested I could claim the loss back. I explained as I didn't know what it was that would be quite difficult! He said my neighbour shouldn't be taking parcels in for other people, I agreed, but pointed out the postman shouldn't be leaving them with neighbours in the first place.
There doesn't seem to be a great deal I can do now, it has been logged, it will be passed to my local office and they will investigate. To be honest I can't see them being too bothered about one parcel, but then i've had bad experiences with Royal Mail before. I will wait and see what happens.
Let's hope it wasn't some amazing prize that i'd won and has been stolen!Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

You've got no hope! We went on holiday once and asked our neighbour to put our recycling wheelie bin out on the relevant day. On our return we had a Royal Mail card through the letter box - "As you were out we left a parcel at the back of the house (wait for it)...........in the wheelie bin"
Never did find out who sent us a parcel and Royal Mail would not/could not help as we did not know who the sender was!0
