Virgin Atlantic - First & Middle Names

Hi,

I booked a holiday to Vegas yesterday for myself and two friends.

On Expedia.co.uk it requested I input all first, middle and last names. I did this, and it all worked out fine - confirmation emails I got from Expedia were correct.

Only one of our party has a middle name and it is correctly written on the Expedia confirmation as SMITH/JOHN DAVID MR, where David would be his middle name.

However, when I logged into Virgin Atlantic's website it has his name on my passneger list/e-ticket written as "Johndavid Smith", making it look as if "Johndavid" is his first name, which it clearly isn't.

In the Advance Passenger Info I've provided for travel to the US I've put John as his first name and David as his middle name.

My question is: Will this cause a problem and do I have to get Virgin to change this prior to departure?

Thanks in advance.

The ticket must match the passport. Having said that airline tickets only have a first name and a surname - no middle names.

That's not strictly true. The US has introduced a new requirement to have all names (including middle) recorded for passengers - I believe for their 'no fly' lists. Whether that's nor supposed to be visible on the ticket is not clear (to me at least).

OP, call Virgin and ask for it to be altered. It's possible they haven't updated appropriate software to deal with this new requirement yet.

I think that is how Virgin do their tickets I seem to remember my middle name being joined.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.

OP no need to worry. We went to Vegas in February, same as you booked through Expedia and flying Virgin, and again the same as you our names appeared fine on the Expedia site but our forenames and middle names were linked on the Virgin website.

I rang Expedia who confirmed this is just how the Virgin website displays the names and they were correct as the system used at the airport separated the names and we didn't have any issues checking in etc.

Don't panic and have a great trip!

Virgin always do this to me too. It has never been a problem, and I have travelled several times since ESTA.
  • Yep. Was worried enough to phone Virgin when it happened to me because the ESTA had just been introduced. Don't worry, it IS just how Virgin do things, we had no problems.

    Hello,

It's nothing to worry about at all. It's the same with most flights! I had the same issue when I flew with Emirates in January but they said the same thing as Virgin
  • Hi

The same thing happened to me last year. I emailed virgin and they stated nothing to worry about. The only issue I had was when I checked in online. The name had to match exactly.

I had no problems at the airport but took copy of the email to airport just in case!
