Making phone calls from stopovers!

hi,

whenever we go on long haul holidays, usually there are some long stopovers. whilst waiting i always have this urge to speak to my parents, the friends whom we are going to visit etc. but since my OH thinks this as an expensive option I usually stay away from this.

so my query is this -
is there any safe, cheap option available to ring UK in particular in such stopovers at all? we have this lengthy stopover at frankfurt this time.

There may be cheaper ways, but one way is to open a Prepaid account with Alpha Telecom(min. £15 opening balance) in order to use their Global Calling service.

That way, a call from an German payphone to a UK landline works out at 12p per minute.

An alternative may be to use the Vodafone Passport service,with a PAYG SIM, dependent on the time of calling.

How about a quick call from a German phone box and then get the person from the UK to call back using a cheap code at 1p or so per minute? Not sure if German phone boxes display their number or not.
