So now you lot understand me, here is the serious stuff...
I'm 51 in a couple of weeks (or forty eleven as I put it) I'm single, My kids have grown up and I now have a 3 year old grandson and a 8 month old granddaughter. I live in a mortgaged flat in east London. I have 2 other properties that I let out, all 3 properties are on interest only mortgages apart from the one I live in which is 75% interest only and 25% repayment.
I earn a good income as a senior middle management teacher so my job is quite secure. Currently I'm on sick leave as I broke my knee after a fall whilst I was out jogging last bank holiday Monday:mad: So I'm taking the opportunity to sort out things that I don't normally have time to do.
Last year, I had an awful time when one of my properties was trashed by tenants who didn't pay their rent for 3 months and did a flit in the night. At the same time my other tenant lost his job and couldn't get benefits so he had to move out. Thus I was carrying 3 mortgages and trying to find £6k to sort out the damage done to my house. I ended up living on my credit cards for 4 months whilst I sorted that out and my credit card debt went from £8k to £19k After it was all done and dusted I went a bit silly and went off to Cuba for 2 weeks at the cost of £1500. Glad I did actually as it was the start of me getting back into positive me mode. Long story that I won't bore you with.
Anyhow, I've been paying my bills quite reasonably and I've got a good credit rating so I decided to take the bull by the horns and get the credit cards sorted out and be unsecured debt free within 3 years. I've been working on it since then and this is where I stand-- CitiBank Card I paid off last month, all done and dusted
- I currently have an Egg Card with 8150.72 on it The 0% interest comes to the end next month and I will move it to another 0% then
- A Virgin Card with £8347.53 0% comes to an end this month and I have just applied for a Santander Zero Card and been given an 8k limit so I'll move most of this debt to that. The remaining balance left at Viirgin will be my priority debt for the next month or so until it is repaid.
- My everyday visa card I got a bit silly with and I have £2526.31 on it at 16.9% This is also a Priority debt for me. I want to get it to zero and pay it off each month
- I also have a car loan with 7 months left to pay. I currently owe £1957.05
So all together I owe £20,981.61 and have allocated £750 per month to service this debt which leaves me debt free in 28 months assuming no interest so rather than sit and fiddle with interest I've given myself 3 years to be completely debt free and be able to concentrate on overpaying my mortgage with a view to getting myself mortgage free by the time I retire at 60. (I know it should be 66 but as I'm hearing impaired I can take my pension earlier from the teacher's pension that I pay into.) I may then decide to work part time in Tescos or something.
So £217 for the car payment and then approx £200 each for the 2 major cards and the balance of approx £130 on the gold card and remainder of the Virgin card to get them down as soon as possible.
When the car is paid for next Jan that £217 will be allocated to the priority debt to get that down as fast as I possibly can.
I also have about £300 'loose' money in my budget for unforeseen expenses and whilst I'm trying to live frugally, I know there'll be kick back times when that gets spent. When it doesn't it will go into the overpayments pot.
I also save £150 per month into a regular saving scheme with a view to building up 3 months wages in an easy access account. I currently have just under 2.
Well that's about it. Constructive comments welcomed. I know I'm not in dire straits, I know I'm really lucky to be on a good wage and have enough time to sort this out so that I can retire reasonably early.:beer:0 -
looking good Moneypenny, nothing looks too drastic, and you've got a plan!!!! Most of us on here, haven't had a plan until now and that's what caused all the problems.
I am just learning to live on a budget (took me a while to learn) and I find it very useful to put all the yearly/quarterly expenses in a seperate account, things like car repairs/TV licence/car tax etc, then I'm always sure that there will be money to pay them when they pop up. I keep this wee account completely seperate from everything else, and its all working well so far.
Keep us posted and I hope it all continues to go well

Morning everyone,
I know I am an interloper on this thread but Nanna and Elsie have suggested that I have a look at the photo.
All I can say - is wow! Not sure which half of the twin it is but I am very impressed!
