Not knowing what your business set up is and my understanding is that these machines/service can be alot more exspensive than you have been quoted by RBS, are you aware that PayPal do a viritual terminal so you can also take payment over the phone/post and face to face. I'm not a lover of Pay Pal but it is an option

Don't forget to look into charge backs and specifically look into non present sales and then find out for sure when you expect to be credited. It is a minefield.

No experience of them ourselves, but seen quite a number of people here mentioning Accept Cards:

We bank with RBS (Natwest), but use BOS Merchant Services for cards. Sorry, can't remember what the initial charge was (or even if there was one), but terminal rental is £14.99 + VAT monthly.

Transaction charges vary according to the type of card.
    Examples:
Visa and other debit cards are per transaction: 16p each
For Visa/Mastercard credit cards it's the monthly total x 0.013

Payments credited to our a/c by BACS, usually 4 working days. When we used to be "in house" with Streamline (which was the same organisation as Natwest), it was something akin to a direct credit rather than BACS and only took 2 days.

I believe you might be able to negotiate that down. If you estimate what the usage of the machine will be in terms of takings you can use that as a negotiating lever to push to the % transaction fee down. You might also be able to negotiate with other providers and play them off each other for better terms. If you can speak to others in your line of work/industry if you can and find out if others have got better rates. Don't lease your equipement, you'll usually pay right through the nose for it if you do.

Also read your contract very carefully and ALL the small print. It may seem obvious but you want to check the contract actually matches up with what you've been quoted. Also check for penalties if you decide you want to change processors or stop accepting cards.

    Hope it helps!

sorry but i thought i would ask a question about this too, and rather than start a new thread.

i am doing a trade type fair in two weeks, and i was wondering if i could hire a machine etc just for the weekend, is there such a thing? or have you got to sign up to them for x amount of time?

If not, a virtual terminal may be your best option as all you will need is a laptop and mobile broadband.
