hi there dont know if i'm in the right place here but was wanting to know what I should do about this.
Yesterday I set about cleaning my house, I was cleaning the oven/hob I had cleaned the interior of the hob and as I lifted the handle to close the door in order to clean the glass exterior the door exploded in my hand & the glass flew everywhere over my kitchen, luckily as this happened I got such a fright that I jumped up out of the room so no damages to me (slightest scratch on my hand) but when I went back into the kitchen the oven door was mangled & in a completely weird shape.
the house I live in is new build and only been in it for 4 months which means the appliance is under guarantee so I tried to contact the smeg number given if there is any probs & surprise surprise their office is not open until Monday. I will contact them again tomorrow however in the mean time other than my nerves being shot to pieces (like my oven door) I have no grill/oven to cook on, unsure if it is safe for me to continue using the hob and god knows how long it will be for someone to come out & fix this.
I will be putting in a complaint regards to this as luckily it wasnt but I could have been much worse, what if my child was in the kitchen at the time, dont bear thinking about. but should I complain to smeg or could this be something to do with the builders, ie incorrectly installed, etc.
also and sorry for going on but if smeg are fixing this would I be able to claim them if it takes time to get fixed as I have no oven/grill therefore can only cook a certain amount of things on hob or get take away meals, great.
any help or if this has ever happened to anyone before I would appreciate their feedback. many thanks

New build less than 4 months old - get the builder/developer to fix. Going through Smeg will, I imagine, take forever. As for complaints, I think (provided the builder/developer fixes it promptly) that it's just one of those things. It's quite common for oven doors to shatter, and is not neccessarily a design or instalation fault.

was it warm when you were cleaning it?
If it was then I don't think they have to fix itMum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

thanks guys for the post, yeah I will pone the builders tomorrow whilst I am on to smeg and try get it sorted cos I cant go without an oven for too long. I was meaning a complaint as yeah if they fix it great but depending on how long it takes to fix I will be inconvenienced and cannot cook normal meals..
No it wasnt hot when I was cleaning it... this may sound silly but it is an oven and does this mean if it gets too hot when cooking then I should worry that the door could shatter again..
thanks again for the replies.0 -
Its designed to get hot. But if it was hot then you put cold water on it could shatter due to the sudden temp change (the same as its not a good idea to pour boiling water on your car windscreen to defrost it).
Sounds like you need meal ideas not involving an oven. I offer Chicken fajitas and Bangers and mash with beans.0 -

Macaroni Cheese, pasta in tomato sauce (really easy to make yourself on the hob) Jacket spuds in the microwave if you have one, oh and don't forget fry ups yumMum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

This is quite a common occurence.
The temperature is irrelevant. The builder should replace it but he may ask you to deal with Smeg because on new builds, the appliances are covered by the manufacturer from the day you move in.
Not a hope in hell of getting 'compensation'. All they are obliged to do is replacement of the damaged article.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
