Firstly we should ban any icelandic imports. Then we should issue an ultimatium. Pay up or air strikes begin. The air strikes will hit at the heart of their economy, and to take out their military. Then we should move in and take all their gold.
My God! I never knew that people like you were for real, outside of The Sun letters page.

Do your knuckles drag much on the ground?

I love this schoolboy notion of there being an Icelandic military worth "taking out"!

Except from wikipedia, we find that "Iceland..maintains no standing army, navy, or air force."

Oh well, there must be something that "we" can bomb of theirs.

    What about Iceland Food stores?

    Operation Raspberry Ripple..

The UK holds more political clout than Iceland. The US will not purposely attack the british military, it would be political suicide.

This time, both the Netherland and UK are involved and it's clear monies are owed. There's questionable transactions before the banks went bust.

    100% guaranteed. :T

The UK won't be allowed to go to war with another member of NATO. It really is that simple.

Perhaps the most ruthless aspect of the banking swindle is that Joe Public is expected to foot the bill for these enormous bailouts.

The compliant corporate media does not even discuss the alternatives, and they exist.

To end the Great Depression, Roosevelt introduced the Glass-Steagall Act, which put the banks through bankruptcy re-organisation.

What was crucial then and was so effective in ending the Depression, was the separation of retail banking, which is essential for every economy, from the toxic speculative "banking" of the so-called "investment banks". Under Glass-Steagall, the former were saved, and the latter were rightly left to flounder.

From the Independent today, (Mon 11 April)...

While not mentioning the Glass-Steagall Act by name, the article states:
the Independent Commission on Banking (ICB) is "calling for firewalls to separate banks' High Street operations from their "casino" investment arms."
"After the £40bn-worth of taxpayer bailouts needed to save Britain's banks during the financial crisis, the aim of the Commission is to ensure that riskier investment operations can go bust without taking ordinary savers with them."
In essence, what Sir John Vickers, head of the Commission, proposes is a UK-version of the US Glass-Steagall Act of 1932, which was foolishly repealed by Clinton in the late 1990s.

What pressure would need to be brough to ensure that the banks accepted this urgent legislation?

A further issue is how to help the hundreds of thousands of mortgaged home owners who are on the brink of repossession?

There are those who argue that the British Government should introduce legislation of the flavour of LaRouche's Homeowners and Bank Protection Act:
repossessions and evictions should be frozen

mortgages should be adjusted to reflect the fair price of the home and with new, appropriate rates of interest.

distressed mortgages should convert for a stabilising period to rental tenancies

That's the last Bjork song I'm going to download then :(

Just pirate it for free. If Iceland's citizens won't respect their international treaty obligations, why should we respect our obligations to them under the Berne convention?

I think military action is a step too far.

However we should send a message that you don't mess the UK about. Economic warfare is called for now, they dont wanna pay us then we'll make them pay 10x through restricted trade. Forget the cod fishing agreements, send in our fishing boats and get the cod like we used to. The royal navy can go and protect them, any act of violence against a British vessel and the Navy will defend them with lethal force.
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Maybe the Icelandic account should be handed over to one of our more aggresive debt recoveries firms, who can then be phoning them 8 times a day until they pay up.

Good on the people of Iceland! Taxpayers should not be on the hook for bad decisions made by banks or individual investors, here or in Iceland. I wonder how many people on this board who are arguing for the money to be paid by Iceland are OK with the 4 billion or so taxpayers in the UK will potentially pay to bail out Portugal?
