Are you talking about the common people of Iceland, who enjoyed an unsurpassed standard of living for years, often coming top of global surveys? Or the common people of the UK and Netherlands, whose tax money ended up indirectly footing the bill when the sham that underpinned it all collapsed?0 -

Why shouldn't the people of Iceland enjoy a good standard of living? There isn't many of them, so they'll be fairly easy to distract with good wages whilst their Governments play down at the casino.
If you're saying that the UK tax payers get a pants deal then yes, I'll agree with you, but global finance is a pyramid scheme and when the music stops someone is left up in air. If commoners here want their governments to listen to them then maybe they should stop being so bloody passive, even Jesus himself got mad enough to smash up the tables of the money lenders.
We can't be state pets most of the time then cry when our Governments stitch us up! Remember... we are the nation that wrings it's hands when a protester knocks off an easter egg in the Queens favourite shop.0 -
It does appear that the poor Icelandic citizens were happy to take the upside, but now want to opt out when it comes to paying the downside.0

Agree 100%. I am so annoyed by it, and so annoyed our government are now talking of suing instead of just launching a military attack.I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0 -

What would you suggest? Fish fingers at dawn
Anyway it looks like they've well and truly shot themseves in the foot! The consequences of this referendum vote is that Iceland's years in the financial wilderness could be extended much further.
Moody's and other ratings agencies look set to downgrade the country even further, making it prohibitively more expensive to borrow on the open markets.
Iceland's bid to join the EU will be paused or even vetoed by Britain and the Netherlands. And the tiny Atlantic economy is facing legal action in the EFTA court which might force it to pay up sooner than planned and at a punitive interest rate.
Democracy doesn't pay if you're an Icelander.0 -

Firstly we should ban any icelandic imports. Then we should issue an ultimatium. Pay up or air strikes begin. The air strikes will hit at the heart of their economy, and to take out their military. Then we should move in and take all their gold.I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0 -

no, the FSA hasn't got any money anywhere, it's got a huge overdraft.0 -

Weren't the people running Landsbanki a group of Russians though?
If you want to go after people for harming our country then I suggest you start here.
Visit pretty much any investment bank and the investment arms of all the big banks and you will find a target rich environment. These people cost us far more than those in Iceland ever did, and that's net of tax. Somewhere in the order of 20 times and that's before you consider the indirect damage from the recession they caused.
You could then move on to the US there's plenty more there.
Not sticking up for the the Icelandic (Russian?) bankers BTW, do them after that, just think you should go after them in descending order of damage caused.0 -

Rather like the Lloyds "Names" who were equally outraged at the thought of having to cover losses after years of being happy to take a cut of the profits.0
