We use aptamil- Alex seems to like it and isn't causing problems so far.
Just for the OP- I tried to BF but it broke my heart him screaming because he was hungry because I had no milk at all- not a drop of colostrum even- for 6 days.
Interestingly enough, ebm made him projectile vomit.
Did you have any help or support? It sounds like it must have been a really tough time for you.0 -
My child had constipation with SMA and we put them on Aptamil which was much better. But it's not the same for all babies, pick one and if it isn't working out move to another one. Our health visitor told us we must not change formula brand once we'd started on SMA, but the important thing to realise is Health Visitors are overpaid morons who should be first to join the dole queue once the cutbacks start. Can't remember them giving me one piece of decent advice. And don't be guilted into breast feeding if you really can't do it - much better for the baby to have a happy relaxed mother than one who is tired and anxious all the time because they can't breastfeed.0

in your opinion perhaps?
i've had very good health visitors and a bad one (which i think was based on a personality clash), but i wouldn't tar them all with the same brush!
OP:
go with any first milk - their all about the same (except the comfort milks which is much thicker and primarily used for sensitivity of the stomachs).
the reality is that the babies stomach is so small and sensitive that they will posset some milk out weather breast or bottle.
the chances are that because a baby cannot express itself (excuse the pun!) they can cry alot which makes people think its to do with the feed. just remember that the baby has spent 40 ish weeks cocooned in your womb, massaged daily by your muscles, listening to your voice, body sounds etc, when suddenly they are out and lack the security of the womb and all its surrounding vibes.Give blood - its free0 -
I have to kind of agree fatballz the majority of health visitors i have seen havent had a clue apart from realling off guidelines to you and i have had a few with my 3 kids spanning 11yrs. I'm not saying all are the same as i have had one who was absolutely fabulous but i think that probably had more to do with the fact she had 3 kids herself and knew exactly what it was like rather than just refering to books and medical text.:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0

.. I would say that the Heinz one is the best IMO as it smelt nicer (some of them stink)...
Just for info, they're apparently phasing Heinz Nurture out soon - http://www.heinzbaby.co.uk/nurture-discontinuation-message-page.aspx?gclid=CJqz-5_bqaACFShBlAodjCS1YQ0 -

That said, you aren't supposed to use the powder from birth are you?
Really? First I've heard and I've got an almost 14yo, a 12 yo and a 10 month old who have all been formula fed.
If you can't use the powder from birth, what the chuff are you meant to use then?
And don't say cartons because they weren't out when my eldest were babies ~ unless they only came out in certain areas?feelinggood wrote: »Sorry, I should have said that in my experience.
What experience is that then? Seeing as you don't even know that you can give a newborn powdered formula, how on earth would you know how women make the formula up?
I'm sorry Feelie, but you have annoyed me over this breast feeding malarky once again.
The OP didn't ask about breastfeeding, she asked about which formula to use!
OP, I've used Cow & Gate with all 3 of my children and no problem with any of them.
There is no good or bad formula to use, but if you do decide to use it and baby has a problem with a certain brand, you can get advice one which other brand to change to xTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
According to someone at Cow & Gate, the cartons have been around for 12(ish) years, which would tie in why I had not seen them before I had the youngest last year. They may have come out in late 98/early 99 as they definitely weren't around when I had my daughter on New Years Day 1998.
They might have been introduced earlier for other brands, but what's what I've just been told by C&G.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
If I were you, I'd stock up with a few (3-4) cartons of first milk (I don't think it matters, but a lot of people have said Aptamil is the closest bovine facsimile to human breastmilk). I'd also get a small supply of disposable, presterilised bottles (from Amazon or JoJoMamanBeBe).
Personally, I bf my LO (now 12 months) for 9 and a half months. I stopped when the biting and messing about just escalated!
From day 1, I had bottlefeeding kit in just in case. We did need it in the end, there was 10days @3monthsish when I was on essential meds that weren't bf compliant. So he had formula for that time and I expressed. I don't think the baby really noticed!! He had no probs switching back either. Don't worry - I didn't waste the breastmilk - I had it in coffee, yum yum!
Good luck breastfeeding - it's nice when it works (and you'll save so much money!), but don't beat yourself up if it doesn't - life goes on, most of us 70s babies were formula fed on formula that I'm sure was just little better than Marvel, and we've lived to tell the tale.
The single best Breastfeeding aid for me was Lansinoh, for the burning nips in the early days, then savoy cabbage for the burning nips in the post-early days. Our bedroom smelled like milky cabbage soup. Mmm.0
