floor covering for hallway and perhaps staircase & landing..

Has anyone any advice to offer on floor covering for my hallway? It runs from the front door (which is our main access) in an L shape to the dining room and lounge (both currently carpeted). I'd love sonething easy to clean and maintain. The carpet that's down at present covers the hall, stairs and landing and was down when I bought the house 5 years ago. It's good quality but very dated, dark and ready for a good clean - however I've been stripping the paintwork with a hot air gun and i've melted it in parts so now I think it's time to replace it (something I was planning to do before too much longer anyway). My dilemma is; do I go for something like laminate or ceramic tiles for the hall and recarpet the stairs and landing? or do I just have the whole thing recarpeted (as I'm guessing laminating stairs is difficult/impossible)? My main criteria are that it's hardwaring, easy to keep clean and fairly neutral. I'm also restricted by budget. I'm wondering what others have researched or tried so I can make an informed choice and hopefully spend my limited resources wisely.

The third option is you go for lino of some sort , probably the cheapest option but may not be as hard wearing, although my mams house has a foam backed lino with a laminate flooring pattern on that is hard wearing, in fact at first I thought she did have wooden flooring when I saw it.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Hi northern_star.......just a thought (and you may not be willing to go down this road anyway) but have you got accidental damage cover on your home insurance? It might cover the cost of replacing the carpet?
Good luck anyway with whatever you choose....I am also looking to do something with a L-shape hallway hence my interest in your thread.

The fourth option is Amtica or G-Floor or something similar. Hard-wearing, good looking and easy to clean. They are warmer underfoot than ceramics or wood. And hideously expensive.0

Might start by getting quotes for the different types of flooring - once I've seen the figures perhaps my options will be greatly narrowed and the choice will make itself!

Fifth option is sisal, seagrass, jute or coir - like this. But you can get it much cheaper than Crucial Trading :eek:Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0

Does anyone have any experience of Laminated stairs? I always think it looks very presentable and i'd much rather sweep downs stairs than hoover them, I imagine they'd be very durable also.anyone got any cons??RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

Hard coverings on stairs are noisy.0

A friend of mine has just had the whole of her downstairs floor stripped back down to floorboards and varnished a light honey colour. The stairs have a neutral coloured carpet runner and stair rods - looks clean, light and airy!0

Hello, sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm looking for natural flooring for my flat. Where can you get it cheaper than Crucial Trading? Also, how much should I expect to pay for underlay for this type of carpet?
Thanks!0
