Charge for CC use

is there anyway around paying the 2% charge my car dealer wants to charge me for paying by cc. Once i get the car i will transfer the balance to a cheaper long term rate. is there anyway of transfering the money from cc to current account?

No, not if you want to pay by credit card. MBNA card let you transfer money from a crdit card to a bank account and some credit cards issue credit card check but they will all end up costing you more than the 2%.

It's a matter for negotiation between you and the garage. It's their fee to charge.

    - do they have a threshold below which they don't charge (my wife recently paid a £2k deposit with no charge, but anything bigger would have been a 2% fee)?

    - could you threaten to take your business elsewhere if they don't waive it / reduce the price of the car?

    - could they include a set of mats etc equal to the value of the charge?

    - would they discount the price of any other extras you're buying with the car by an amount equal to the fee (e.g. sureguard, gap protection cover, a warranty etc)?

    - could they offer 2 free valet vouchers in the next 6 months?

Expensive - you will pay a charge twice. The 2% to the dealer, plus a balance transfer fee - perhaps 3%.

Try to get a card that has credit card cheques or will allow you to transfer money to a current account. I've had cheques from MBNA, Halifax, CapitalOne in the past. Perhaps others do them. At least this way you'll only be charged once.

Another way would be to get a 12 months on purchases (or some such). Then pay the 2% to the dealer and that's it - no need to transfer. Tesco has such a card and you'll get Tesco's vouchers too.

The problem is whether you can get a sufficient limit on a new card. There's nothing to stop you applying for 2 cards on the same day and asking the dealer to split the transaction over 2 cards. The extra search shouldn't be a problem unless you've applied for others recently.

How much is the car up for?
Are you putting in a part ex?

If you have no part ex but are paying screen price then offer to pay them the actual price with no surplus or walk away. They will soon chase and come to you for a deal.
