Just a thought, but have you triedd propping your son up in bed a little when he has a cold? If you put a pillow under his mattress (for safety - don't put extra pillows on his bed at this age), it can help to stop the gunk gathering in his throat and irritating him.
Or bricks under the legs of the bed / cot.

my son has severe brittle asthma and his consultant was adamant that i should never use cough medicines for him as they could mask a severe attack which could kill him. I never used them for the other two kids either, finding a good dose of honey and lemon much more effective. and for colds and flu - a remedy my grandfather taught me - take some cider (dry rather than sweet but that will do at a pinch), put in a saucepan and bring to the boil and boil rapidly for a few minutes (this burns off the alcohol) then add a teaspoon of honey and a good squeeze of lemon for each half pint. you can drink it hot or let it cool, its delicious and very soothing on sore throats chests and makes you a bit sleepy!

If they can't sell cough mix for children; what's it doing on the shelf then?

Because you can still buy them for over 6's!!

Whatever your feelings on this the assistant did right and did her job properly. I sure everyone who has dubbed pharmacy staff as "counter nazi's" would rather this than a sales assistant sell a medicine to a child (or anyone for that matter) and them die (or be seriously affected by the sold medicine) as the assistant didn't do their job properly!!!!

Over the counter medicines are not very effective for coughs. The ones you can buy in tescos are different to the ones that Pharmacy's can now not sell for under 6's. They are akin to simple linctus and will only sooth the throat. The ones that are now unavailable to under 6's will not be on Tesco's shelves.

As someone has said the packagings for most of these meds still hasn't been updated but any decent pharmacy assistant will know that they cannot legally now sell them for anyone under 6

I say well done to the sales assistant for a job well done!!!

When I said counter nazi I was referring to them asking silly questions about mine and OH's medications :rotfl:

I have three children aged 7,5 and 5 and I don't approve of them being given cough medicine tbh, not something Ive ever done, went a bit mad when people suggest I'm a bad mother because they don't have it

I think there's nothing wrong with calpol if their throat is sore from coughing, or honey and lemon is mentioned.

Ex used to dose DD1 with cough medicine all the time and smoke in the house  oddly, as soon as I put my foot down and said no more medicine till no one smokes in the house, the cough I was 'neglecting my daughter by not medicating' disappeared.

I think it's good if this will stop that kind of hypocritical behaviour, but it won't people will just lie anyway.

We use a scheme called emas here we speak to the Chemist with symptoms and they do the prescription and hand it over straight away! it is free for children and saves going to the doctor for teething probs/coughs etc.
I do not understand how they can refuse to serve you as these medicines can be bought in supermarkets and very easily? i hope your LO is ok xx

I went in to get some for a friends LO as a help as she was at work a few months back from a popular supermarket and was refused..the lady asked how old LO was and i said almost 6 (couple of weeks off) and she said that was the new rule..6 or over?? i was shocked and left empty handed..the mum went into our local tesco and got some there instead in the end!!

I took my prescription for my diabetic meds to a newly opened pharmacy and was quizzed on how I took it!

The only reason I can think of is that it's a new pharmacy, new customer and quite a high dose tablet.

But she was quite nice about it and immediately handed it over as I repeated verbatim what it said on the label without looking.

    I never knew this - that's shocking!
My two are 6 & 7 now and I always give them a half dose, especially the little one, when he gets a chesty cough it is either a chest infection or his atshma. He prefers ice cream when his throat is sore, fortunately his chest infections are getting less frequent.

ive always used mediced as with my little ones its one of the only medicines that we find works,we would never dream of giving over the recommened dose though. i agree ice cream always good for a sore throat :)

As a kid we always took kallen and morphine (prob spelt wrong) when we had the olympics and bad stomach cramps. This happened to my lad the other month so i went to the chemist to buy some, she asked how old he is i said 8, and apparently it can only be used in over 12's. She offered me some other tablet that was suitible for over 6;s, triple the price. I brought them and gave him some. My friend had a bottle of K+M we compared the ingredients and active ingerdients they were the same!!
