Difficult situation potentially,
A colleague's husband is a sparky (industrial not domestic apparently). He's not had much if any work for months so I asked if he'd quote to rewire the house I'm about to buy.
Met him at the house this morning and I'm afraid I wasn't too impressed. Didn't seem very knowledgable, said the house doesn't need re-wiring as only 30 years old so shouldn't need looking at for another 25 years!
Thing is the owner said it does need doing, it was his parents house and his dad was a bit er, well not good at diy. It's got the old fuses not a consumer unit and added on sockets (surface wired) here and there.
It's going to be tricky if I don't use him, what do I tell his wife!

What is your relationship with the owner of the house? Not Again0

only seller/purchaser type relationship 1984. He said his dad was lovely but thought it was ok to drill through from the dining room to garage and then run off loads of sockets from the plug in the dining room.
The son says he has disconnected things like that that he thinks are dangerous.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0 -
It's legal, wether it needs replacing is another matter.
Can you not get some other quotes to judge his with?
yes, I have someone else going out to do that for me. But Mrs will expect me to use him and might be upset if I go with someone else. The only thing I can think of, well 2 actually is to say I didn't have it done, or say I had to have someone do it who had the relevant qualifications so that Building Control will be happy.Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Just tell him you want it done so either he does it or you get someone else..Not Again0 -
Absolutely no difficulty. If he's not qualified for domestic work then he shouldn't be doing the work. Would you ask a Ford mechanic to service the Ferrari just because he's married to a friend? No of course not.Difficult situation potentially..........................It's going to be tricky if I don't use him..........

Ask him if he has got his 17th edition and Part P. If he is doing commercial he may well not have Part P which means he isn't qualified for the job.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

To heck with building control, would you be happy having someone who isn't up to date with current qualifications?0 -
Hello
I work for building control for the local council and can confirm what phil99 said is true. You also need to consider what building control will charge you to make the application to get the work approved by them, at our council it would be £128.12 for works up to the value of 2k. So if you have to pay something around this amount to get the work approved, you need to see if it is worth getting someone else to do it so you don't have to pay building regs application fee. Tell your wife that!
Hope this makes sense!Everyone I know wants to be a millionaire.

Forgot another point, if you sell the house and tell the buyer this work has been done, they will ask for some documentation to prove it has been done legally, so you will really need to apply for building regs if he can't self-certify.Everyone I know wants to be a millionaire.
