BT Puzzle

Hi

I decided to check that I am still on the cheapest/most basic BT calling plan: Unlimited Weekend Plan.

I prefer this plan because I've always believed that there is no lock-in/minimum contract to this plan.

I am still on it, but there is a contradiction between what it says on my calling plan page, and what it says when i click on "Learn more".

Can anyone explain?!

    Simples.

You're tied to a 12 month contract for the calling plan unless you upgrade.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi Heinz
    Thanks for your reply.

I've been searching around the BT site and I don't think that's it:

    Apparently the calling plan does indeed have no minimum contract;
however, the rental does have a minimum 12 month contract if you're a new customer/home mover, etc.

I'm not a new customer - been with BT for years, so I don't know why they've locked me into rental for a year. The only thing I can think of that may have triggered them to treat me as a new customer is that I chose to alter my payment method to paying by whole bill direct debit. Would they really regard such a change as me beginning a new contract with them?! I did it online in seconds after last quarter's bill, and I'm pretty sure there was no mention of a contract starting.

Anyway, as far as i can tell (if I've understood this correctly), I'm not on a renewable contract with them - and that was the main thing that was worrying me.

    p.s.
but as i am locked into the rental for 12 months then i am in effect locked into the calling plan, too, i guess - apart from an upgrade, as you say.
so what you said is true in as much as it all boils down to the same!

I'd fire off a question to them asking why your calling plan says "on a 12 month minimum term".

I just moved off the 12 month evenings and weekends contract to the Unlimited Weekend Plan and online it says

"Unlimited UK* Weekend calls from midnight on Friday to midnight on Sunday. All you pay is line rental." and next to it £11.54

So I'd get them to sort it out.

It has been like this for ages on the BT site, all part of their confusion marketing. It allows the call centre to say anything and not be wrong.

Just being sarcastic, but it would not surprise me.
