    Hi Shamish,

I believe that if you say a cheque has been lost in the post, it can be cancelled without charge. I'm with NatWest and this actually happened to me a long time ago.

I'm sure other MSEers will correct me if this is no longer the case.

If it hasn't been cashed within the past month, there's a good chance it has indeed got lost, so tell your bank this.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

If a cheque is lost most banks will stop it for free provided it already hasn't been debited to your account and that you did not write a card number on the reverse.

Surely it is irrelevant whether you write the card number on the back as the cheque guarantee is only applicable if the payee writes it on themselves. The bank does not therefore have to honour the cheque.

But if you look at a lot of these adverts some will ask for a number to be put on back of cheque. I agree with you that this is against cheque card regulations but makes it more difficult for bank to stop a cheque.
  • Just say that it is lost in the post and there will be no charge.

This depends on the bank, some banks do charge for cheques lost in the post. When I worked for HSBC they used to charge £7 but that was a good few years ago - its bound to have gone up hey!!

which bank is it? I know hfx will cancel a chq free if it has lost (done this a few times) but what you need to be careful of is that if it is under the guarantee limit then they may not cancel it
