Change Computer Name

I've just bought a used desktop, so the settings relate to the previous owner. Is it possible to change the computer name and winlogon name and registered name for software.

Obviously, when I write a word document I would prefer my name and not someone else's in the file path.

I have been looking on Google for ages and follwed advice to change the regedit regowner, but it has not changed it even when I've re-booted.

Great, followed your advice in creating a new account, did that changed new account to Administrator and changed old acccount to Limited. Now the new account has disappeared, so I only have old one as a limited account and the create new account has disappeared, so I can't create another one. Now don't know what to do.

If you reboot the computer and press F8 (the key at the top of the keyboard) you should be asked to 'Boot from...' choose Harddrive, then choose 'Safe Mode'. You should then see your user accounts. Once you choose one of them, a popup appears asking if you want to continue working in safe mode, your graphics driver hasn't been activated so things will seem LARGE and messy. Just say 'yes' then dive into Control Panel\User Accounts and give your old account back the Admin privelleges it once had. Reboot again, let it do its thing and log back in as you wish.

You should be aware that depending upon how the software was setup, the account your choosing to delete may be as far as the operating system is concerned the ONLY one that is licensed to use the software. So deleting that account may mean you're not permitted access to the software in that profile.

I went down the shop, came back and both user accounts were there again, so I don't know what happened.

You should be aware that depending upon how the software was setup, the account your choosing to delete may be as far as the operating system is concerned the ONLY one that is licensed to use the software. So deleting that account may mean you're not permitted access to the software in that profile.

I'm a bit dubious about deleting the old user account in case it messes things up.
