KENYA Holiday - AFRICAN SAFARI CLUB

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the advice. We arent expecting luxury, i would consider us to be well seasoned travellers and we have been to some of the poorest places in the world through our work.
I have read many of the reports on trip advisor, and my thoughts were that the people writing had obviously been expecting western standards and luxuries. I was shocked that people would expect this, firstly because it is a 3rd world country and secondly because the holiday is super cheap, i cant find anything else for less than £900 with any other operator. You cant expect much for a holiday half the price of anything else in the area.
As for the tummy upsets, i would have expected this too, fairly common for travel to African Countries. I always seem to get a poorly tummy! My OH always evades it though.
What currency is best to take? I see that ASC works in Euros, but places except USD and of course, Kenya Shillings.:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -

From memory we took Euros. If you want to tip staff make sure you give them paper currency as they can't easily change up a £1 coin for example. Everything in the hotel is charged in euros, and if you pay in another currency i think they recalculate everything back to euros.
A bottle of water in the hotel is a euro but in the supermarket is much much cheaper and you do get into a routine of picking up a couple of large bottles every so often.0 -

Well I can tell you that if anyone is going to get a 'dicky tummy' then it will be MrsP - she can look at food in a foreign country and get the runs - it is an annual event and happens EVERY time we are abroad.
On our ASC holiday however, she ate the same as me - including fish, fruit etc and she was absolutely fine for the duration of the holiday - Unbelievable!
Just be careful and I am sure you will be fine.
Not sure if your hotel will be the same, but keep your windows closed as there are thieves around - no - not the human variety, no issues there, but the monkeys who will wander around your balcony in the hope of either picking up something you have left lying around or will attempt to get into your room via the window! Quite funny though.0 -

We havent fixed on a hotel yet, at the moment its Laguna Sea Lodge, but as we're leaving it to the very last minute, we're hoping that prices will come down and we may be able to afford one of their more expensive hotels.

Which hotel did you stay at?
It was the Dolphin on Shanzu beach. At the time there were two sections - one older and one renovated. It may be that all of the rooms have now been been updated - maybe someone can confirm.
Its sister hotel which virtually was a few hundred hards away was handy as the pool/bar areas were better. I think it was the Flamingo hotel if my memory serves me right.
We went in March 2005 and the weather was excellent.
As many have correctly stated on this thread, go there with an open mind as it is a very poor country, but I would certainly go back again without any hesitation.
You will enjoy it, but I think it will help if you can be a little tolerant of the begging and hassle from the hawkers, but you will get used to it.
We think we are badly done to in the UK, however, after my trip to Kenya, I realised how lucky we are and how we take the basic day to day things for granted.0
