Banks earning money from petrol stations.

Do you ever go to Asda or Tesco and put petrol in your car and pay at the machine, with a debit or credit card ?
I think a warning is in order for this.
Use your card for any other purchase and it will start pending straight away, use it at a pay and go machine and the bank will not even have any knowledge you have even made a transaction,it wont pend for at least a day, making you think you have money you didnt realize you had.
A nice little earner for the bank on overdraft charges.

I find the best way to prevent that is by keeping track of my purchases and not expecting money to come out immediately after I have used my card.0

Quick reply, and I do keep extremely good track of my finances!
But I rang the bank as I do regularly, sometimes it is possible to overlook something,(only human)
Hence you ring the bank only to be told yes you are within your limit.
Im having a telephone call listened to because of this.
And I was charged for the OD.
It doesnt pend genious everything else does.0 -

you know how much money you have in your bank if you spend it twice no wonder you get charged
ie you ahve a 100 pounds in your accoount you spend 50 pounds on petrol
next day you go to cashpoint (and unless youve been paid) you ahve 100 pounds in the account you know youve spent 50quid of that so if you take 100 out your taking money thats not yours to takeReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0 -
!!! on mate I live on the edge I new I had £5.00 in my bank, hence fiver on petrol.
Ring bank !
Please sir has this £5 made me go overdrawn. No Madam !
Not telling me about the petrol pay and go method doesnt immediately start pending like other purchases.
Maybe Im not putting my point across in an understandible fashion.
EVERYTHING pends but not pay and go petrol stations.
End of,and now to be moving on !!!!!!!!0 -

Not all transactions pend straight away, it depends on the system used by the retailer. There are basically two types of system, one that is will send and check the transactions as they happen and another that downloads the transactions once a day. The second one will not check that you have funds available either which could push you overdrawn. If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550

Isnt there a warning on the pumps. There is at my local supermarket stations - also states if you use solo or electron may withhold £20 until transaction completes.
Not everything else does pend immediately i have had some things take a couple of days.0 -
If you keep track of your money, it's not an issue. It annoys me when my spreadsheet doesn't tally with my bank balance, but I know the money will come out at some point. As someone said above, if you spend it twice, it's no wonder you get hammered.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

The other thing i've noticed about using the self serve fuel stations at supermarkets is when I use a credit card it always tells me that it's authorised up to a maximum of £70 spend.
I now only have 1 card with a very small limit and I knew that I only had at the most £35 on it until I paid it off at the end of the month, so it's making it way to easy for people to go over their agreed credit card limits as well.If At First You Don't Succeed, Call It Version 1.00 -
