Overlap in moving dates - what to do about utilities?

I'm moving house soon, and will be completing on a property 4 days before the tenancy expires at my rented flat, which gives me a few days to get moved and clean up after myself. Presumably from the day of completion I become liable for gas, electric, water etc. usage at the new property. If I inform my suppliers of a switch on completion day, does that mean I can't use these services at my rented flat?

In other words is it possible to have gas, electric, water, and phone services running concurrently at two properties, or is that just going to be a load of extra hassle?

  • yes................the utilities don't mind at all.

would only be an issue if you wanted to move and take your phone number with you as you can't use the same number at 2 different addresses

Yup, you can have 2 lots of utilities no problem. I had a longer overlap than yours, and just reduced the DDebit payments on the first to be 5 quid a month until my rental period was done. (4 days overlap is nice timing!).

As goldengirl said, broadband + phone switch has to be planned in advance, the other utilities are easy.

IF you have BT make sure you give them notice, i think its 30 days they need otherwise there is a charge to switch to your new property. I cant remember what the charge is exactly, but i gave them 1 weeks notice and it was about £5, not exactly going to break the bank, but better off in your pocket than theirs.
