Want to buy a banger-don't know where to start

Hi guys
My husband has just come back fom the garage and said his engine has gone. It's going to cost to much to replace it so we've just about decided to get rid and get a new one. It's no use getting one with a warrenty from a showroom cos he wants to put biodiesil in it which would invalidate the warranty anyway, so you've no piece of mind that nothing's going to go wrong, so my idea, was to spend hardly anything on a car, saying around £500 then if it does only last 6 months you don't feel as bad.
Can anyone give me any advice about looking for a car in this pricerange and any tips of good models or things to look out for, we know next to nothing about cars.
Thanks, yp

Last year, I bought an N reg fiesta for £200 that lasted me, then my uncle around 12months with only minor repairs needed.
Something like this would be ideal for you (from autotrader) except for the lack of MOT. If I was going for this car, I would offer £600 if they get a 12month MOT:
1997 FORD Fiesta 1.8 Diesel,
97000 miles, Taxed End July, MOTd Aug, Runs 100%, Two New Tyres, Economical, Recently Serviced, Cheap For Quick Sale.. £525. ovno

Didn't the garage have any suggestions of cars that are for sale - maybe they do work for hobby type car dealers, that sell from home, or other customers that are ready for a newer car.
You'll also find the secondhand dealers will have trade ins, that are too good to scrap - but not good enough for retail sale - they MIGHT let you buy on 'trade terms', so don't go back to them if you have a problem!!
The good thing is, there are verrrrry few REAL bangers around, but plenty of perfectly useable older cars, that have been replaced simply due to their age.

I bought (or got given) a few bangers over the years.
There is a thing called "bangernomics". Buy a banger for £500, run it into the ground, and when any expensive repairs come up, get rid! This is a really cheap way of running a car.
As the guys have said, papers, autotrader etc are great, obviously have a test drive first though!

Look in the Local paper or the loot. AS you arent spending much, theres no point travelling miles to take a look.
I recently picked up an R plate Fiat Brava for £500 with MOT and tax. If I get 6 months use out of it, I'll be happy. If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0
