Problem with Scottish Power after switching

I changed supplier from E.On to Scottish Power last september, but they attempted to bill me for the following two months after I switched. I have already paid an E.On bill for that period.
E.On are adament that they had transferred my details and were supplying me (on a far better tarriff, I'll add), Scottish Power are denying all knowledge and are claiming that they were supplying me at the time.
Scottish Power told me they would investigate and call me back within two weeks, but didn't and just threw it straight at debt collectors. I've sucessfully ignored them for the past few months, but I've just had a letter from Scottish Power threating to file a default against me (and providing an 0871 number to contact them on).
Can they file a default without taking me to court first? And how can I find out which supplier is actually in the right?

Hi omfg-Tobster - You need to take control of this situation quickly.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH PHONE CALLS or EMAILS to the Customer Service Desk, as their computer system has already gone into 'Debt Collection Mode' and that's all the Service Desk staff will see on thier screen
Write to SP heading the letter Complaint - Just like that in bold- List the meter readings
at you change of supplier and make a point of complaining about haressment by their Debt Dept.
By doing this your problem is handled by a special team who have to resolve it within a fixed time-frame
Good Luck0 -
Good luck with them I switched to them last August after being lured with £39 p/m after being with NPower for £52 p/m gas/electric. After 2 payments they upped my payments to £120 p/m !!!!!!!!
I have switched again elsewhere for £92 p/m gas/electric  I think they're an absolute shower I really do....
Am waiting for final bill which should result in a refund since 25/2/10 still waiting
Good luck again xxMFW 2011 No. 161 £946.54/£2000 TargetApril 9/15March 14/15

Hi omfg_Tobster
Sorry to hear about your situation. If you are unclear who is responsible for charging you for a given period you should contact the suppliers and find out the periods they are billing you for and the meter readings they are using. Eon should be billing you to the same date and meter reading that ScottishPower started billing you from. If this is not the case then one of the suppliers need to correct their records.
Are you still being supplied by SP? If so, do you have a payment plan in place to cover what you are using? Have you spoken to SP to confirm what is outstanding and where the balance came from?
If you want me to look into your account then send me your details.
I would take action as soon as possible as you do not want a default marker on your account as this will remain on your credit file for 6 years.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Kind Regards
