    Hi Captainladypants

My friend has confirmed that MEF are now accepting volunteers for the period of a week onwards now, so if you wanted to do a week or two that would be just fine. I will PM you the contact details you need. :)

Oh, I just wanted to mention again about the elephant rides in case you weren't happy about that. MEF is a member of WSPA and being accepted as a member by WSPA involves (quite rightly) an extremely rigorous vetting procedure so pleased rest assured that the giving of rides at MEF is totally fine for the two elephants that do so :)
  • Thanks for the PM, I have just replied!

I really want to do this, I have done for years. I don't want to not do it and end up regretting it in the future. I would love to do it for a month or more so I think i'm going to save save save and go away for longer than a couple of weeks. It may take a year or so to save up, but it's something for me to aim for! I'm so excited that i've now got the ball rolling and some genuine reviews from personal experiences, thank you!!

i just got back from Costa Rica a few weeks ago where we volunteered at a wild animal rescue in a place near Arenal. They had a wide variety of animals there, including monkeys, raccoons, anteaters, caiman, kinkajoos and various wide birds. Their website is http://www.institutoasis.com/ and they'll help put you up with a local host family too
  • Thanks for that Kiraroo! How long were you there for? What did you have to do whilst there??

Bad news everyone.....this trip will definately now be on hold. I have to buy a new car first as mine has got to go to car heaven. Very sad as i love my car but also because I had my heart set on going away in the new year, i was trying to sort out flights yesterday! Watch this space!

    Hi
We were actually only there for one day! But we met other volunteers there who had been there for months. They were living with local families, learning Spanish and helping with the animals. But in our single day there we got to lay concrete round and enclosure for a blind racoon, feed hand reared baby racoons and anteater, play with the adult racoons and just help out with odd bits and pieces.

We also visited a place called Las Pumas wildcat rescue which was incredible. This was in a place called Las Canas, we didn't volunteer here but they did have volunteer programmes and they had monkeys, 4-5 different types of large wildcats. Costa Rica is a really incredible country, the people are friendly, the landscape is breath taking and the wildlife is very diverse
