Hi, i am after any advice to help me look after my cuttings,,now grown into plants.
They are geraniums or pelagoriums not sure which as the woman who gave me a small cutting didnt know and i am pretty hopeless!
I have managed to grow fairly decent size plants from one leaf cutting each of the 3 different original plants of hers.
They all have several layer of leafs but no flowers yet,,,had them about 8-10mnths maybe more,, when can i expect them to flower? Will they just flower themselves? or do i have to take of certain leaves? I just keep potting them on when they outgrow their pot...all a bit of a mystery to me and the original plants were so colourful and have produced endless flowers over the last year!
thanks in advance for any advice :-)

There's lots of confusion about what is a geranium & what's a pelargonium because the wrong term is often used. If it's an outdoor, hardy border variety, then it's a geranium. If it's an indoor or not-hardy one that usually goes on a windowsill, conservatory or in summer beds or containers & needs to be kept frost-free to survive the winter, then it's a pelargonium. I think pelargoniums are part of the geranium family which is why it's confusing. I grow lots of hardy geraniums in my borders and they divide up into new plants really well. My earliest ones usually start to flower in April/May and others later in the summer. They flower again if you dead-head them regularly. If your cuttings are pelargoniums, they should start to flower late Spring & all through the summer if the plants are big enough. Hope this helps. I shall have to take some pelargonium cuttings myelf this year as I lost loads of mine in the greenhouse over winter......they were covered up, but still just too cold for them.2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

I've kept my pelargonium stock going for years, by cuttings in late summer; but have got tired of the mess and hassle on the windowsills - so last summer I got a packet of seeds from Wilkinsons for 29p. I sowed them in modular trays in August in my conservatory and have 30 plants, all about 8" high without the need for any potting on. They will go straight out in the garden in late May. Admittedly the seeds were F2 which means random colour/variety; but I think even much more expensive F1 seeds are much less trouble, and are dead easy to deal with.0

Hi, thankyou I guess i am just a bit fed up of them being on the windowsill and never flowering,,granted they have been growing bigger and been repotted a couple of times,,,I just wasn't sure if i had to pinch out/remove anything or not to get them to flower,,, now i realise i just have to wait a bit longer. Thankyou
:)

Any chance of a pic? what food are you using? Cuttings usually flower within a couple of months for pelargoniums. Given enough light, food, water they should flower soon. It won't hurt to stop them however this will delay any flowers by about 6 more weeks.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Mine look like this.
Are they pelargonium or geranium? They were outside last summer and brought in late Autumn till now (thought they might die). They flowered indoors all winter as well.
Thanks.0 -

Thanks.
There are over 300 species or pelargonium and they have been in this country since, I think, the 17century when Triste was one of the first to describe them. I've got one that was named after him and grows like a carrot and is one of the very few that has scented flowers (but they only smell at night)I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -

For photos, you can also use http://imageshack.us
This is free, all you do is click upload to get the image from your computer. Then it will say upload successful and you need to copy what is in the DIRECT LINK box and insert that url into "Insert Image" icon on this message post facility.0
