Should be unemployed and retired people doing Jury service.

That way, these problems would not exist.

When i was called to jury service I wrote and explained that I do not believe in the prison system at all as it clearly fails to work. I was studying criminology at the time and was excused jury service.
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.

On deferral - business reasons are accepted. I would think that as a one-man business, you would have to completely close down your business while you were on jury service (the guidance specifically mentions small businesses as being likely to suffer hardship). Wouldn't this make you lose business, new customers, risk losing existing customers through bad service etc etc

I'm trying to be open minded about it as it should be seen as a civic duty and not something to try and get out of. I think I will be able to keep existing customer happy with support in the evening it will simply mean I have to halt development, I've spoken to all 3 of the main clients and 2 are sympathetic, the other is "grudgingly sympathetic" so I think it's unfair to claim it would adversely affect business (other than financially). I could easily couch it so that it did mind you which is why it gets irritating when people slag you off for running a dividend rather than salary based remuneration strategy (especially on a site called "money saving expert")... rise above though eh!

Hi my questiom isn't "can I get off", it's can I claim the lost earnings allowance basd on what I earn for my own company rather than what I earn weekly in my pay packet (which as a director isn't the way it works!).

My understanding is that you can only claim for salary. Dividends happen because of your company's profits, so it's your company that has made the loss. They don't compensate third parties.

In which case I need to get a excusal, which ruins the parity of the system doesn't it?

Its about time we used professional juries and stopped relying on the public.

That will only defer your problem to a later date. The options are deferment or exemption by the way.

Sorry I'm only quoting what the jury service advisory people told me... I can get a deferment or an "excusal" which means I dont have to do it this time... I think an exemption might be something which puts you off the list for good but I'm only guessing?

That's right, but you can only defer once. Exemption is only on very specific grounds. The easiest way is to reach your 70th birthday!
