Bank cashed a cheque I had cancelled!

I recently had my car repaired, and paid by cheque (£630). The following day (Saturday) the fault returned.
I phoned the garage but it was closed, so I called the bank and cancelled the cheque.
On the Monday I went to the garage and began a dispute with them. I thought I was in a strong position because they hadn't been paid.
However, despite being told by my bank that the cheque had been stopped, and this being verified by their telephone recording, and despite them charging me ten pounds for cancelling it, the cheque was still paid.
The garage now don't want or need to negotiate with me, and my car still isn't fixed.
I have complained to the bank and they have admitted liability, and offered me £30. But I want my full cheque amount back (so I can afford to get the car repaired properly!).
Do I have a chance? I am thinking of pursuing it through the Financial Ombudsman Service.

are you aware that its ilegal to cancel a cheque in that instance?0

Make a written complaint to the bank. Regardless of the legality of writing a cheque then cancelling it (which I believe is a civil matter, not criminal), the bank should not have paid the cheque.0

What day did the garage present the cheque at their bank and what day did you try to cancel it. Usually you have until about 3:30 on the day a cheque is presented to cancel it. After that, it's too late.0
