Letters for previous owner of house...

I don't know if this is the right part of the forum to post this.

I bought a house last month from a couple who were splitting up. For some reason I was still recieving their mail. Once I had a pile of them I'd phone the man up and he'd pick them up, he said he was waiting on a letter from the DVLA. I thought it was strange that they did not have the mail forwarded to different address via Royal Mail. But just thought as they were split up and lived in different addresses they didn't want the other person to see the mail. The man picked up both sets of mail...

I noticed that there was a few "urgent" letters and decided to open a couple. It seems that he owes quite a lot of money to banks etc and they are trying to chase him up.
I'm wondering what do I do, will this house now be blacklisted because of his non-payments of debts, should I have opened the letters, do I re-post them with not known at this address since 5th February?

Thanks for any replies...

No, your house will not be blacklisted.

It could be a criminal offence to open other peoples mai.

All you need to do is write on the envelope
    NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS

you really dont need to do any more than that. Its not your problem.

Keep something near your door to prove that you live at that house just in case yu get callers.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Write "A £30 admin charge will be levied for dealing with any future correspondance. Further letters sent to this address will be deemed acceptance of these terms."

    Or something like that
    :)

that is not legally correct for a whole host of reasons, proof being one of them as you do not know the letter gets back to them, and they are hardly going to say it did...hey send it back recorded though.....herm,....nope still not a contract
My posts are just my opinions and are not offered as legal advice - though I consider them darn fine opinions none the less.:cool2:

My bad spelling...well I rush type these opinions on my own time, so sorry, but they are free.:o

The issue of legality of opening others' mail was done to death in a thread here about a month ago......

the legality of opening ones post is argued over and over again.

As far as I am concerned that you are allowed to open post that is addressed to your address for anyone as long as you do not use it to the detriment of that person

others will disagree but hey ho

And them some, with no definite conclusion.

If you open and do not return letters from debt collectors they will assume they still live at the address, and be really hard to get rid of. RTS everything; you are not responsible for forwarding mail if they can't be bothered.
    Been away for a while.

Return everything to sender saying the recipient is dead. It gets both parties to rectify the issue a lot quicker especially if one of the companies is their Life Insurance company. Trust me.

Leaving aside legal issues, isn't it a bit morally suspect to be saying someone is Dead, when they aren't ....?

Why should we or anyone else trust you when you openly admit on a public forum that you would lie about the life and death of the previous owner of your home.......?
