Car Insurance No Claims

I have been driving since December 2008 and am looking to change cars - I took my insurance out in around September 2008. Since then it has been renewed.

I am now looking to change cars, but the car I really want comes in two power variants - a 115 BHP model and a 135 BHP model. The premium, optional extra-filled models are usually the 135 models, however my insurers (Quinn) wont cover anything over 120 BHP due to my age.

I got a quote with Aviva (on the 135), and using my current details (1 years NCB) it came back at an acceptable price (£1237 for the year versus Quinns projected £1262 for the 115)

The downside is... I want my new car now, not when my policy ends. This will obviously nullify the second year of no claims i've started building up now...

My insurance is already paid in full.

Is there any way I can save my no claims for this year or not?

Also, do Aviva do any sort of DOC on their 3rd party policy? I have it on mine atm and it's really useful - but I dont know of anyone else that does it :/

If you don't complete the year you won't get your 2nd years bonus.

You need to check what refund you will get if you cancel, calculate the amount you will then need to add to the new policy and decide if it's cost effective.

The only other alternative is to look for something under 120 BHP (and think of the fuel saving instead!! - power comes at a price - fuel, insurance, higher accident risk, higher theft risk etc.... ).

PS the DOC is there for emergencies. It covers RTA cover only which is the bare minimum cover and not the same as third party cover.

You wouldn't want to be using it on a regular basis as there's no theft cover either.

I have my heart set on the MG ZT - the two diesel models are the same insurance group, get the same MPG and have no higher theft issues as you can't tell the power without the V5.

Going to look at the 135 model soon, you only live once

Road Traffic Act Cover is the same as Third Party Only Cover in the UK and there are no companies that I know of that specify it is for emergencies only

Quinn's DOC *is* third party, and the cars have valid insurance (with theft cover) anyway.

Don't use it a lot, but very handy occasionally.

Quinn also specify no mileage limits etc, so it's not just for emergencies - shame I lose this in August no matter what.
