If you're in London it will cost you at least £844 plus VAT for National Grid to move the service pipe. That's for up to 2m. £947 for >2-6metres, £1,123 for >6-10metres.

I need mine moving about 20cm. Yup that's £844 + VAT. It will take them no time at all. But it seems they have a monoply and there's nothing I can do about it!

I honestly can't believe these prices. I have just found out the gas meter in a property I've bought is hidden away in the back of an old larder slap bang in the middle of the kitchen wall where I was planning to put a cooker. Silly me for believing the estate agent  who said it was under all that junk under the stairs!! Is there any other option? I would just want it moved into the sensible place of in the utility cupboard or uinderstairs or maybe even mounted on the external wall? Anyone had any experince of having the meter moved for free?

You wont get it done for free, that's for certain. Unfortunately your trapped into using NG and they charge a heck of a lot.
