Dumb question?! what to expect from a jumble sale?

Options
Hey guys sorry if this is a question that seems a little strange or repeated, but i noticed a jumble sale ad in my local paper for 1pm tomorrow at a local church, its the first time i've spotted one locally. I'm a little unsure whether it will be worth going to or not. I've only ever attended one carboot sale, (my clock and brain don't understand anything before 9am on a weekend;)) but i'm hoping to start going to lot more when the weather picks up.

But can anyone tell me are they hugely different from a carboot? will there be cheaper items? i've never been and don't know what to expect?:undecided

Im hoping to get some great vintage clothing, anything that might catch my eye.

Thanks

    Hi Kayke -
Jumble sales are generally a bit cheaper than car boot sales, but less open to haggling...!!
They aren't hugely different from car boot sales, apart from they are inside....!

Have fun! (take your own shopping bags to carry your loot home!!)
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

Last time I went to a (alleged) jumble sale, half the stalls were tombola stalls. Pay 20p for a ticket and you might win a tin of peas - wow!
What is happening to the English Language? These are not isolated, but repeated every day.
'Definate', 'Aswell', 'Rediculous', 'Payed'...and the best of all 'Could Of'. How can anyone think that 'Could Of' can actually mean anything. You may as well write 'Could Zebra' for all the sense it makes.

i grew up going to them as we couldnt afford new belongings, the old people would always be there early in a queue and suddenly became very strong and powerful as they push and shove to get to the front! you can get some great things but it is literally piles of stuff (often not, erm, too clean) on tables so you have to really rummage. Shoes & toys often a favourite section for me!
Usually pick up shoes for between 20p-£1 and clothes are often 20p or 50p each and you can often get bric a brac for 10p per item too.

Be prepared to be shoved and elbowed aside by old people. Of course, you can't do it back to them!

I've been going to jumble sales all my life and still buy a lot of my clothes from them today.
Expect to be pushed out of the way, elbowed in the ribs and have stuff snatched out of your arms. They aren't for the feint-hearted (unless of course we're rougher in the West Midlands).
I've rarely paid more than £1 for anything (including the 1960's G-Plan coffee table I picked up a fortnight ago). Don't expect loads of treasure or vintage, I do well as I've been at it for years.
Most places have piles of overwashed high street tat and Primarni.

Jumble sales will be for church funds or a charity so don't be too tight.

I never understand why old people go to jumble sales - surely they have enough stuff they've collected over their lifetime.
As for the elbowing, one jumble I was once at I overheard a woman (youngish) saying 'If anyone else pushes me i'll turn round and smack 'em! Hopefully she gave up jumbling after that - it probably wasn't for her.
  • great these sales - get good mans gear for work etc for 20p - might niff a bit though - you will allways get jammed up against some soap dodger with dreadlocks ! - and your arms will ache like hell afterwards !!
As Martin says - please be nice - there is no such thing as a stupid question ! ;)

The people who run these jumble sales are not all daft and they do have people who come in to assess the goods they have.
Anything worth anything is already claimed by the auction house, then the ladies who run it have free dibs.
You get what is left. In big piles. Unwashed. Unclean. As is.
They are a lot different to carboot sales.
