iTunes no Load Problem

Just taken delivery of my partners Motorola V3-iM, the iTunes version.
No matter what I do I can not get iTunes to load on my XP, I see by googling 'iTunes load problem' that its not just me.....it seems to be a problem with quicktime (something to do with the new version) and I've read that installing a older version of quicktime then uninstalling the whole lot, reboot, install iTunes, reboot, but this does not work for me.
Anyhow, tried all the suggestions I can find and iTunes just will not load up. I can see iTunes flash up quickly in process mgr but it won't stay open. Then I have iTunesHelper.exe and IpodService.exe left running....
Anyone know of any iTunes alternatives?
Also, do I even need iTunes installing? I do remember seeing it running on a m8's p.c and it looked very slow, buggy, nasty. When I plug the V3-iM into the comp I get a new removable disk and inside there are two folders:-
iTunes
mobile
Now I would of thought that just dragging and dropping my mp3's into the iTunes folder would put my music onto the phones memory card but it doesnt do it.
Please help......
