BT Line Fault

I'm looking for some advise on where to go next with BT.

My phone line has a terrible crackle on it and my O2 broadband keeps dropping. I've had all the broadband equipment changed by O2 and it's made no difference. So got a good phone from work (brand new still in the box) and plugged it into the master socket as BT advise you to do, it still crackled.

I Rang BT and logged a fault call, all the time I was on to them it was crackling. The engineer turned up this morning, NOTHING, line was silent and perfect. Even on the phone I brought home. He left, 20 mins later the crackle is back.

Not yet rang BT to tell them, but I can imagine them saying theirs no fault. Can anyone give me some advise on where to go next

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Right you said Master Socket which is different to Test socket.

Ideally you want to be using the test socket if possible.

Go back to your master socket have a close look, Hopefully you will see that the bottom half is removable with just two screws, remove this, behind you should see that all your extensions are wired into the bit you have just removed and should see another phone socket still on the wall. (this is your test socket)

Plug directly into this, this is a single cable back to BT with all your internal wiring disconnected if you still get cracking on this you have an external problem with your line thus you can not fix this. if all seems ok, I would suggest that one of your internal extensions is picking up interference or you may have a faulty micro filter installed somewhere in your house (PS you do have a micro filter on every line dont you?)

let us know how u get on and i will advise some more

If the engineer tested it on the test socket rather than the master socket (as he surely would have done) and it's OK, then as PeterDuckett says, you have a problem on your internal wiring. This is your responsibility, nothing to do with BT, so get it fixed by an independent engineer, as BT will charge you a small fortune to fix extension wiring.
Repeat the test yourself (dial 17070, select option 2, quiet line test), then either arrrrange your own repair, or if the fault is present on the test socket, get BT back.
I very much hope it is the latter, as otherwise BT will almost certainly charge you for the callout, I think the fee is about £115.

Sorry guys I meant the test socket. Everything I've done has been in the little test socket hidden away behind the main socket.

Yeah I've got micro filters on every extension in the house, well the 2 I have, and also tested the phone in the test socket with and without the a micro filter.

I'll give BT another go and see what they have to say.
  • Just to throw it out their are you sure that the phone is ok!!

from what you have said it sounds like external wiring, though make sure you use a microfilter for a quite line test in the test socket and try another one too!!

if that fails you need to get BT involved try and record time of day and weather conditions when you here crakleing it may be a fault street lamp or a bit of dew in the morning

    Hi Ste_B

I can take a look into the potential fault on your line if you would like, if you look into profile section you will find our contact information. On receipt on your details I will gladly carry out some checks on your line to establish what might be causing the noise on your line.
