Changing a Letter Plate

My darling sons snapped the letterplate off of my letterbox this week. I have spoken to the company that fitted the door and they tell me the whole letterbox will have to be replaced at a cost of approximately £60.00:eek:

This seems a lot to me and I was wondering if firstly this is a good price ? and secondly do they need to change the complete letterbox ? can they not just change the letter plate ? infact can I not just change the letterplate myself ? is difficult ? any help gratefully received.

Should be easy enough to change, usually just fastened from back to front by screws just undo and fit new one, check the hole size and ask an ironmongery supplier or at a DIY store. £60 to send someone out and fit it is dear when you look at costing your own time but for a business it may cost them that much in fuel and labour time!
  • yes it is a fair price for someone to come out and do it, although it will probably only take them about 10 minutes its the traveling times and other little bits that add up, however it is very easy to do yourself. you haven't said if it is a upvc door or a wooden door, either way they are very simple to do and not very expensive.

your local hardware store, (B&Q, Wilkinson's ect.) will stock what you need, tools that you will need should be no more than a screw driver, if it is a upvc door and you need to replace the whole box then you may need a small hacksaw to cut it down to size but again this is easy enough to do.

    Good luck.

  • ARGH a hacksaw ?!?!?!?!?! I can manage a screwdriver not sure about a saw though.
It's a UPVC door btw. I am going to have a go at it this week.

    Thanks for the help.
  • You can buy letterboxes online, check out the link:

You may have to cut one sleeve of your new letterbox down to suit the thickness of your door using a hacksaw, but don't worry its only plastic :o
