Can anyone give me some info on A & L?

Just got a premier direct account through Alliance and Leicester, and although they have sent me LOADS of info can't answer a couple of simple questions.

How much does A & L charge you for withdrawing from another link machine?
(They are very sneaky and say we don't charge from our machines in brochure but nothing else)

Also when I paid in myfirst deposit at my local branch, the man in front was told he couldn't pay in without his cheque book. Is this stupid but true?

I have heard some gripes about A & L and I wasn't planning to keep my account forever, I really got it for the cashback thru quidco and refer a friend bonus, but would like to hear some opinions about them in general.

I must say that the opening process has been quite good, but they seem to have wasted 17 envelopes by delivering everything seperately. think the postie hates me!

Thanks

    8. Paying money into your account

    At a branch

You can deposit cash or cheques at any of our branches across the country just remember to take your card with you.

Answer: they don't charge for using link machines. Just be wary of non-link machines in garages, hospitals etc. which charge a couple of quid to use.

You can also make deposits at the post office (take your debit card with you) - which might save you a trip into town. A&L own girobank, so this works well.

A&L recently changed their terms and conditions: something about you not being able to make branch based deposits any longer, using the deposit books you were given when opening the account (check the shark infested small print). You can still make deposits using your debit card though.

I've had this account for six months and so far so good. However - the amount of paperwork you get at the start is bewildering. The 10% regular savings account is worth using, as long as you appreciate you will NOT receive 300 quid on 3000 quid deposited in 12 month instalments - I think you get about 125.
