need some more information to help you...
what sortof things do you intend to use your laptop for? watching dvds, using office programs (word excel etc.) internet and email, etc etc etc
do you have any resources guzzlers (programs such as photoshop)?
do you want your laptop to be portable (small, lightweight) or as a desktop replacement?0 -
Now Chris dont let Albertross's comments regarding you talking sense in the child !!!!!! thread. hmm maybe that should be reworded?
just a quick question Chris your not in to fishing are you?
DVD writers are common in most Laptops now as long as you stay away from the bottom end spec you will be fine on that count.
Well the OP does state it is to replace a desktop so I expect your not bothered about portability and super light weight. If all your doing is web and office and basic image manipulation you can get away with the bottom end even a celeron CPU.
My advice would be to buy somthing that slightly pushes your budget to get somthing that you wont be complainig about that it is slow.
The Inspiron 6400's are quite nice, the basic model starts at £490 it requires an upgrade to the DVD writer which is about £35 and I would also buy the better 9 cell battery for another £12
Pentium single core 1.8Ghz
512MB memory
80GB hard drive
DVD writer
15.4" widescreen
The graphics is an intel 950 intergrated card it wont blow you away with performance but will be fine, I have seen systems witht he older 900 chip running the sims 2 and other image editing without problems.
Dont forget to knock the stupid warrenty off.
ohh yeah the Price £536 not too bad I dont think.
The problem is laptop prices and spec seem to change so much at the moment its hard ot say where the best deal is. I got a really nice Toshiba a few month ago for someone slightly better than the above for £490 from savastore.com0
