How long do you keep house buying paperwork?

I never know what to keep/bin when it comes to important documentation, so keep everything.

However, I have everything from when we bought our previous house 5 yearsa ago and I guess I can bin some of that at least. Or can I bin all of it now that the new owners have responsibility for it?

How long should I keep all correspondence if I've sold the house on? And how about the house we've just bought?

And mortgage paperwork?

Any time limit you know of or work by?

Thanks

For the houses I have bought and sold, I'm going to keep all of the important paperwork such as solicitors correspondence and back correspondence for as long as I live. It's all in one small ring binder.

If you have a scanner then get into the habit of scanning all correspondence and then you can destroy the originals. I use Paperport for filing the scans. You can fit several filing cabinets onto a CD or thumb drive. Back up regularly.

If we hadn't kept ours we woudlnt' have been able to claim for a mis sold endowment. Well worth the space I'd say.

Yes we kept all ours for the past 12 years... it has been useful to refer back now that we are selling the property.

i would keep it all also - for years and years !! With regulations changing all the time, any documents to do with the house may well prevent you having to pay for an indemnity guarantee insurance policy in 20032 when, if current regs carry on the way they are, it will be compulsory if your flower beds dont match colours in spring and autumn !

I keep all mine forever, more from historical interest than anything. When I'm old & grey I can look through the paperwork & recall how nervous I was at taking on a mortgage for £45,000. :o It seemed such a tremendous sum at the time.:rotfl:

Then a £250,000 house was something people dreamed about, a bit like winning the lottery. :rotfl:

Like Andrew, I keep all the documents, along with the original house blurb sheets from the various estate agents, in a big storage box.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
