If the IP address resides from a UK ISP, it's likely to be on RIPE.

However, you're only likely to find out the name of the ISP and details of their IP allocations rather than the end user details.

You could try AW IP locator that gives you a number of credits. TBH such programs are not that accurate. I think it has something to do with gateways. I live in the BH postcode area but am shown as being in London. I was playing with another prog a while ago and my IP address ( static ) was shown in Sheffield

I agree they're not that good for geographic accuracy, I'm in Blackpool (and with Tesco broadband) and most IP detection software puts me in Leeds!!!

as the others have said, yes, but you are limited.

    http://www.dnsstuff.com/

is a site that may be helpful

if you are getting abuse from a certain ip you can look up who the web provider is and email them.

if you are after an ip because you suspect your other half is cheating, for example, it wont really help locate where they are. you wouldnt be given the subscribers personal details as im pretty sure this sort of info is data protected.

however it could belong to a company and their details are usualy published on the results of the ip search sites posted.

thanks for all the input.......I suspect someone has given sign on details to a private forum to someone who then posts as that person...........obviously dont realise that mods can see the ip numbers and posts coming from two completely different ones under on id.

it could be that the person doesnt have a static ip address, people on dail up and even broad band may not have the same ip each time they log on ( braodband normally does have static though).

or they could have logged in from an internet cafe/ work place or where ever.

Taking that into account and we are looking into that the posting styles are very different between the ips.

Have managed to locate that someone using that ip is supposedly in the states whereas other in in uk.........more research me thinks.

You could use a proxy site to hide the origin of your own IP address. This could make it look like a person in the UK is posting from anywhere abroad.

    A proxy works...........(very basically)

Your computer connects to the proxy site>The proxy connects to the site you want to view>The site sends the page to the proxy>The proxy sends the page to you.

The websites that you view will think your IP address is the proxy site address. They won't know where the info goes after this.
