I read Down and Out in Paris in London at school and didn't get it, but I'd like to try it again as an adult, so thanks for the reminder.

I read Down and Out in my student days. I really relished reading about his hero's life as a tramp before he graduated to higher things as a washer-upper in Paris. I remember him saying that the more expensive the restaurant the more of other people's spit there is in the food (because of all the tasting to get it right).
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Go for it lj, you're among friends. Plus we already think you're strange because you're a Wolves fan.

I struggled to thank that. I only just managed it. Must be the ol' black country humour.;)

In fiction terms I'm looking to read:

To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee: its the 50th anniversary of the book and I have it lined up as my next modern classic once I've finished 1984. It's taken me ages to order in, one of the most popular book in libraries at the moment.

    Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck

The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald

The Road to Wigan Pier, Orwell

For Whom the Bell Tolls, Hemmingway

Imperium/Lustrum, Robert Harris: I've read Pompeii and really enjoyed it. If I like these two I'll probably read Ghost too.

Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death, M C Beaton: these books are hugely popular and I want to read one to find out why. They sound quite funny so I'm hoping I'll enjoy them.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera: my favourite work of fiction, about time for a re-read.

To Kill A Mockingbird is my second favourite book in the world. there was an excellent documentary on the box recently about Harper Lee.

Steinbeck, Orwell and Hemmingway are masters at what they do.

I have never been able to get into Fitzgerald.

Robert Harris is what they call a rattling good read.

    I haven't read the rest

Apologies if you've mentioned it before ws, but what's your first fave?
