That's really interesting. DD mocks were really bad......so we were fretting ...then she came back with 1A 4 B 3 C...and 2D (chem and biology......so no future competition for Miss Kool in the sciences :D) but she is a miffed as her mates (in diff schools) got to do new subjects like social sciences etc.
She had to do the basic ones (like the olden days) and even got a surprise C in physics.

Apparently D is a pass now? Is that so?

DD and the others have their grades omitted by 'special decree' from the schools score....seeing as they were from a non selective school....which then went bust.

The rocky adolescent phase? Yup we had that last year and the 1st year of GCSE coursework went down the pan in a waft of female teen/adolescent angst and drama.

Congrats to SSS, GBDSS and Silvercars kids too.

Well, she will only have to do 1 yr of her course now as the grades were higher ....still wish she would have done A's around the corner then the Pittmans up Chancery Lane...but never mind. Parents golden rule with teens....guide them, don't tell ...and be ready to catch them if things go awry.

As an aside, as all DD aquaintances are not from her school but others, loads of them seem to have gotten pregnant.....esp in SE London....I think we are up to about 5 at last count.
    I was quite shocked TBH.

:D and congrats to lil' ms fc too.

And exams aren't meant for everyone btw, I may be a scientist but I can't cut a pattern! ;)

That's what mocks are for - so they can make their mistakes when it doesn't matter. ;) Well done to her, anyway. Tell her there are still plenty of employers and courses that regard traditional subjects as of more academic merit than newer ones. <ducks quickly and refuses to engage in that debate>

Incidentally, "value added" is taken from aptitude tests that they do within a few weeks of arriving at the school, not from comparing with mocks.

It depends what you mean by "pass". A*-C are supposed to be the equivalent of O-level passes, whereas D and below are supposed to be equivalent to CSE passes. That's why universities etc refer to "A*-C passes" or "good passes" or similar phrases.

I teach a few kids whose parents could do with hearing that from you!

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

After the high of this morning, eldest has come crashing down again because a few got better grades than he did..and he is saying he is dumb again.

Not sure what I need to say to him to make him realise that he has surpassed all expectation (the highest he was predicted at the beginning of the GCSE years was an E/F) and you are not dumb if you get 9 in the A-C range!

And to think he managed to get those grades whilst also having to have a fair bit of time off school for his diagnostic process in the last year and getting a devastating diagnosis just two weeks before the exams started, his results are blooming spectacular.

Unfortunately, I think all those years of being told he was stupid by some teachers (who thought they were being well meaning in trying to not let him get his hopes up), have left their mark....I almost went into his old primary school on the way back from getting his results this morning, to brandish his results at his year 6 teacher who told me (in front of eldest), that he was the least intelligent in the class and would never amount to anything at a parents evening.

Ok he has dyslexia, but he isn't stupid and all it needed was a bit of extra effort from the teacher to overcome it (I did my best at home, which was then undermined at school)...something his year 10 English teacher did, followed up by his year 11 English teacher which then gave him the confidence to go forward in his other subjects.

He just needed one teacher to believe in him and when just the one did, everything else fell into place....and then all the other teachers started to believe it too.

I just find it amazing that at the start of the GCSE process in year 10, he was still at primary school level in English (not even at year 5 standards) and now he is going to be doing two English A levels out of the four he has been accepted for.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Congratulations to all the youngsters for their achievements. As my old mum-in-law would say, 'You've all done very well.' (Can't portray her accent though!)

And of course the exceptionally clever mums and dads on here..... It's clear where all the kids get their brains from, isn't it? :D

Yes, fantastically well done to all the kids - it all seems so much more stressful now than it did in our day - there were no league tables then, no comparisons or value addeds - you just did the best you could and that was that.

BTW, I was absolutely horrified with what your said your eldest's teacher said in front of him, Sue! No-one with those attitudes/lack of common sense/tact/knowledge of education or basic psychology should ever be in teaching. Amazingly well done to DS1 for rising above that so stunningly.

On a serious note I feel she should train in my field.....she has 'it'...however she won't even consider it.

She's helping us out now so we'll see if she changes her mind over the next few months. No point in me nagging....

Booking a trade fair in Vegas for Feb and she will assist sales......that could help change her mind after 6 months of legal secretarial training.

Actually...can I just put on here....we are doing some really far reaching export at the mo. Sent out to Domenican Republic this week and just had a serious enquiry from Egypt.
Considering we manufacture at UK labour rate....I am surprised.

Nice to think you're helping the UK trade balance, fc. :)

Just shows, if you produce a good enough product, the UK can compete perfectly well against cheaply produced Chinese etc goods. Price is not all - we can compete on quality and the un-valuable (is that a word?) 'style'.

It will probably be short lived unless we start registering some key pieces (am on it this week) as someone we know sent a pic over from Vegas last week of our garment on a stand (the front no less)of a huge Canadian company (bit like New Look over here) and they hadn't even bothered to copy it....just took ours cut the label out (but leaving the sides of it in...doh) and put it up for sale.

Got the evidence in pics and I will be $1000 lighter this week as a Canadian law firm (who specialise in our sector) sends out the first letter to warn them off. We have to stop it going into production (which will be Chinese and produced in the 1000's).

We sponsor a couple of DJ's in Miami and LA now as we are really popular in US at the mo. Handy.

We are trading up North on the UK....and if I am honest here....northern sales will not get me a living space by the sea.....actually, they would barely get us a new bucket and spade.
